Ian Toms is nationally recognized and respected as a real property lease consultant. He is an authority on
tenancy financial issues, lease features, facilities and technicalities, and the art of tenancy negotiation.
With a relentless passion for excellence and client advocacy, Ian brings a "bricks and mortar" practical
approach to every client file. His wealth of solid business experience as a multi-unit retail tenant, commercial
landlord, and realty lease consultant for over 30 years means he knows first hand how challenging premise
lease negotiations can be.
Ian holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of Guelph, and a Real Estate Broker's License through the Ontario College of Real Estate. He has selected hundreds of locations and has drafted and negotiated thousands of leases. His clients include medical professionals such as dentists, physicians, optometric doctors and veterinarians as well as national chain retail clients including Domino's Pizza, Burger King, and Home Hardware. He has completed negotiations in 16 states and 8 provinces with a specific emphasis on the Greater Toronto Area. As the author of over 75 published articles, Ian has been invited to present many seminars to graduating professional healthcare students at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario as well as franchise association meetings.
Mr. Toms earns each client's trust and respect with a quiet, self-confident and non-confrontational approach. As a result of his tenacity and reputation in the industry for not "backing down", he is frequently called upon to provide expert testimony in litigation, mediation and arbitration proceedings.
Outside of the office Ian enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, gardening, cycling, swimming, canoe tripping, practicing yoga and teaching yoga as a volunteer at the YMCA.
Jennifer Madgett has 10 years of combined experience in negotiating and administering lease term renewals,
offer to lease agreements and lease amending agreements as well as customer service, and business
administration. Her efficient and honest "no-nonsense" approach helps provide clarity, open lines of
communication and enables her to maintain a positive relationship between landlord and tenant.
Jennifer is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada having obtained her P1 Paralegal License after completing the dual diploma Paralegal/Law Clerk program at Fleming College. She is currently studying part- time at the University of Windsor Law School to achieve an Executive Certificate in Conflict Management. Jennifer is a licensed Real Estate Sales Representative through the Ontario Real Estate College and has completed additional courses in the areas of Negotiation, Difficult Conversations, and Advanced Alternative Dispute Resolution.
Outside of the office Jennifer enjoys time with her family RVing throughout beautiful Ontario and travelling to sunny destinations.
Jo-Anne Merchant is a lease administration specialist with a meticulous eye for detail and 20 years of
experience as an independent business owner and a licensed Paralegal. She enjoys the challenge of reading
and interpreting the legal aspects of lease documentation and related legislation. Level-headed and
straightforward, Jo-Anne maintains every client file and effectively audits each lease document to ensure the
responsibilities of both parties are being fulfilled.
In addition to lending her expertise in lease analysis and needs assessment, Jo-Anne manages our office and has implemented corporate standards, policies and procedures. She maintains our exclusive lease management software which provides our clients with up to the minute single lease and lease portfolio reports.
Jo-Anne is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada having obtained her P1 Paralegal License after completing the dual diploma Paralegal/Law Clerk program at Fleming College. As a member of the faculty in the School of Justice & Community Development at Fleming College, Jo-Anne is teaching students in the Law Clerk Program.
Outside of the office Jo enjoys Tai Chi, travelling and spending time with her large and growing family.
